Various types of Salvia:
Salvia officinalis: common garden sage; a staple in the herb garden and one of the most cold-hardy, easy herbs for the Saint Louis region, making it a great choice if you are just starting out.
Salvia leucantha: mexican bush sage; a stunning annual sage, with tall stalks of petite purple flowers that bloom in late summer. More info.
- Salvia greggi: autumn sage 'Cherry Chief;' an annual sage that loves hot and dry weather. Unique snapdragon-like red flowers that bloom in late summer to early fall. Edible flowers; attracts hummingbirds.
- Salvia elegans: pineapple sage; Edible flowers and leaves; attracts hummingbirds. More info.
